Oral Cancer Screening
A fast, painless check at every appointment β because early detection changes everything.
Fluorescent Oral Tissue Examination
Oral cancer is among the most serious β but also the most treatable β cancers when caught at an early stage. At ORA FIX Dentistry, we perform a fluorescent light examination of your oral tissues at every single visit, at no extra cost. It takes approximately two minutes and requires no needles, no biopsies, and no discomfort.
What We Screen For
- Abnormal lesions on the tongue, cheeks, and roof of the mouth
- Unusual tissue colour changes or white/red patches
- Lumps, thickening, or asymmetrical tissue
- Persistent sores that do not heal within two weeks
- Early signs of oral disease in high-risk patients (smokers, alcohol users, HPV-positive patients)
How It Works
- Preparation β No special preparation is needed. You rinse with a provided solution that helps healthy tissue fluoresce differently from potentially abnormal areas.
- Examination β Your hygienist uses a safe fluorescent light device to scan the inside of your cheeks, the floor and roof of your mouth, and your tongue.
- Assessment β Any areas that appear abnormal under the light are documented and discussed with you.
- Referral (if needed) β If anything warrants further investigation, we will provide a referral to the appropriate specialist immediately.
Knowledge is power. Most people screened will have completely healthy results, and that's the peace of mind we're here to provide. For the few who receive an early flag, this two-minute screening can be genuinely life-changing.
The Facts About Oral Cancer
1 in 60 Canadians
Oral cancer affects roughly 1 in 60 Canadians at some point in their lifetime. It can affect anyone, regardless of lifestyle habits.
80%+ Survival Rate
When oral cancer is detected in its earliest stage, the five-year survival rate exceeds 80%. Caught late, that number drops significantly.
2-Minute Exam
Our fluorescent screening takes just 2 minutes and is completely pain-free. There is no reason to skip it.
Oral Cancer Screening β Frequently Asked Questions
Who should get oral cancer screening?
Everyone should receive regular oral cancer screening at their dental checkups. This is especially important for people who smoke, use alcohol, have a history of HPV, or have a family history of cancer. We recommend screening for all patients β it takes only 2 minutes.
How often should I get screened for oral cancer?
We perform fluorescent oral cancer screening at every single hygiene appointment. For most patients, that means 1β2 times per year. If you have risk factors, more frequent appointments may be recommended.
Is the screening painful or uncomfortable?
No. Our fluorescent screening is completely painless and non-invasive. You rinse with a special solution, and our hygienist uses a safe fluorescent light device to examine the soft tissues in your mouth. The whole process takes about 2 minutes with no discomfort.
What happens if something is found?
If our screening identifies an area that warrants further investigation, we document it, discuss it with you, and immediately refer you to the appropriate specialist. Early detection gives you the best possible outcomes. Most screenings are completely normal.
Does oral cancer screening cost extra?
No. Oral cancer screening is included at every hygiene appointment at ORA FIX Dentistry β at no extra charge. We believe early detection is too important to be optional or costly.
What is the technology used for screening?
We use a fluorescent light examination system that helps identify abnormal tissue changes that may not be visible to the naked eye. Healthy tissue fluoresces differently from potentially abnormal areas, making early detection more reliable.
Can oral cancer be prevented?
While some oral cancer risk is hereditary, you can reduce your risk by avoiding tobacco and limiting alcohol use. Regular dental checkups and fluorescent screening catch early changes when treatment is most effective.
